Chinoiserie is often misunderstood as being of Chinese origin. This decorative style represents the first fusion of eastern and western tastes, based on an idealised interpretation of the mysterious Orient. In the late 17th Century, the first specimens of Chinese hand-painted wallpapers arrived in England.
Comprising richly coloured, exotic flora and fauna, their exceptional draftsmanship was unequalled by anything produced in Europe at the time. Their beauty and sophistication quickly led to them being considered appropriate for the finest interiors.
Popularity peaked towards the end of the 18th Century and the genre was favoured by monarchy and aristocracy throughout Europe. To this day, these exquisite wallpapers adorn the walls of royal palaces and stately homes across the world and remain the pinnacle of refinement and luxury. ~ fromental

Still Obsessing Over Cut Out Patterns

I recently spent hours obsessing over cut out patterns and all the possibilities of application and design in various materials which seem to be endless and each equally dramatic. Well, it’s not a new concept… Islamic Stucco, Moroccan Copper, French Trellage…

Monkeyed Around With Textiles

Tags

I designed a new palette for a wonderful couple bravely renovating a historic b&b near the beach. She likes the West Indies and Monkeys. This made me think of St. Kitts right away. One side of the island is ash brown sand and the other is white to pinkish shell. The water is two shades of blue-green and the birds of paradise are huge. The monkeys are cheeky brash to sneak into the beer buckets and steal the lemons and limes from unsuspecting tourists laying on beach loungers. I thought of the Florida coast and the colors are all here too. The sand is shell pink on the Gulf and brown sugar at the tip of Jupiter Island on The Treasure Coast. The red lighthouse stands tall watching over the boaters along the shore and the water is the same if not prettier. So out pops The Beach Monkey Textile Collection of Fabrics, Wallpaper, Tile Design, Carpet and Bold Area Rugs… NOT for the historic b&b?….well, a large scale Monkey Flag or Bikini Print Coverlet would be striking folded across a white linen dressed antique bed. It’s all in the composition. That’s what I went to design school for….sigh. So, modern or traditional there are patterns here that work in any setting to create a fresh, breezy, coastal atmosphere. Did I mention that I am a hippy beach chick at heart? Yeah, I love living near the beach.

Fresh New Palettes of Color for 2013

Tags

, , , , , , , ,

The colors are fresh and bright into neon for 2013. I created some color palettes that reflect my urge to design a room as a fauve painting and I found a paint source that can produce these palettes without compromising environmentally safe materials. Sanctuary 9 Design will be using Luxachrome’s water based, non-toxic paints to achieve the look without harm to the environment. So, furniture, fabric, flooring and interior design drawings of designs are currently on the boards…whimsical and fresh like these fashion statements:

The New Corbu: A Retro Mid Century Mod Chest

Introducing the Studz Corbu Chest in hommage to Le Corbu

When I think of Mid-Century Modern I think of the house my Grandfather designed and built on multiple levels and angles. I think of lots of wood, clean lined wood. I think of space age movies and cars with fins. And I think of Le Corbusier with his black leather and metal furniture and the geometry of his designs. So, the Retro Corbu Dresser is thus born. Sporting a minimalist recycled steel base and finger pulls, natural or smokey stained sustainable wood to allow for the beauty of the grain and inlaid black leather belts on top in a chevron pattern. Modern, cool, distinctive. Available in custom sizes to fit your wallspace.

The Swan

Introducing the Studz Collection Swan Chair: Elegant and plush with graceful, yet tailored curves. Dynamic in a pair but she captures attention in a solitary placement. A curved head rest allows you to recline your neck comfortably. Beautiful to view from all sides. She should almost spin like a ballerina so you can see the details all at once. The welt wraps around and down the barrel back. There is a surprise touch of deco trim on the sides of the t-cushion, an additional deco swan studded applique across the front with colorful arm panels. Stunning in the Stardust ’39 w/chrome accent color palette shown that has made its way back to the forefront of many Fall 2012-SpringS 2013 Fashion Collections. Yummy in a soft natural leather or velvet. Equally dreamy is a choice variety of sustainable (soft yet durable) bamboo fabrics for a lighter approach. Eight Way Hand Tied of Sustainable Construction throughout. This classic interior design piece will endure the years gracefully….. yes, a Swan.

There’s a “New Butterfly” fluttering about!

Introducing another casegood piece in my Studz Collection: Le Nouveau Papillon. An art nouveau inspired piece to decorate a front entry, make sense of that niche, use bedside or jazz up a guest bath with a vessel sink. Shown in the Stardust finish with Colours de Mucha decorative studs.Available in other color combinations and sizes. Equally dramatic in black and ivory with touches of amber. Runway designs have plenty of color studded garments this season. Why not some upholstery and cabinetry too? I love the look. The complimentary chair will make an appearance next….

Brilliant Split Compliment Movie Set Design

Tags

, ,

I had to watch the movie TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY twice over because I was mesmerized by the detail of Split Compliment Color Harmony and Set/ Wardrobe Design for every scene. I mean, EVERY scene is shot incredibly perfect right down to the color change of the leaves on the trees. So, I was distracted the first watch from the equally brilliant acting and story. Still in awe….

A split compliment color combination creates a subtle dramatic harmony to the eye in any room design. Take a look at how it created a mood throughout this movie:

The last pic at bottom is my favorite and a MASTERPIECE!
